چکیده
conclusions optimal wc values for defining mets were 91.5 cm and 85.5 cm in men and women, respectively. the cut-off values recommended by world organizations are not appropriate for an adult population living in ahvaz city. results the cut-off points of wc, according to a maximum sum of sensitivity plus specificity for detecting at least two components of mets were found to be 91.5 cm and 85.5 cm in men and women, respectively. using these values, sensitivity and specificity were 61% in men and 65% in women. the sensitivity of the male population and the specificity of the female population were found to be higher than the values proposed by idf and atp iii. objectives the aim of this study was to compare the cut-off points of wc proposed by the international diabetes federation (idf), adult treatment panel (atp iii), and iranian national committee of obesity (inco) with that of the present study for predicting the mets. patients and methods this cross-sectional study was performed on 930 individuals (439 males and 491 females) aged more than 20 years living in ahvaz city, capital of khuzestan province in southwestern iran during 2009 - 2010. waist circumference cut-off values were obtained using a receiver operator characteristic curve. optimal cut-off values were calculated by plotting the true-positive rate against the false-positive rate. also, sensitivity, specificity, and youden’s index were calculated. background metabolic syndrome (mets) is a well-known risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. waist circumference (wc) is an essential component for the diagnosis of the mets.

Optimal cut‐off point of waist circumference for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in Japanese subjects
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been redefined by a new criterion in Japan, in which waist circumference cut-off points, that is 85 cm for men and 90 cm for women, are used; however, objections are rising against this criterion. The present study examined the criterion for waist circumference to predict the accumulation of the components of MetS. In the present study, we used data for 5972 Japane...

BACKGROUND The determination of cutoff points for healthy waist circumference (WC) is of paramount importance for prevention, optimum management, and prognostication of obesity, the metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus, and coronary heart disease. The aim of this project was to establish the cutoff level for WC in rural Basrah in Iraq, one of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle ...

متن کاملProposed cut‐off values of the waist circumference for metabolic syndrome based on visceral fat volume in a Japanese population
AIM/INTRODUCTION Waist circumference (WC) is the most important parameter for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. The present study was carried out to obtain optimal WC cut-off values for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in a Japanese population based on the measurement of total intra-abdominal visceral fat volume (VFV), which could be expected to reflect visceral obesity more precisely than viscer...

I n 2005, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the Japanese Committee for the Diagnostic Criteria of Metabolic Syndrome (Japanese definition) proposed metabolic syndrome definitions for the Japanese population (1,2). Both definitions included waist circumference as an essential component and adopted cut points of 85 cm for men and 90 cm for women based on the relationship between wai...
متن کاملA proposal for the cutoff point of waist circumference for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in the Japanese population.
O ver the past 2 decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of subjects with the metabolic syndrome in Japan as well as in Western countries. Because subjects with the metabolic syndrome have an elevated risk of development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (1–3), there is an urgent need to establish strategies to prevent an epidemic of this syndrome. In particular, ...
